What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes individuals to briefly (but repeatedly) stop breathing while asleep, resulting in daily fatigue, overall health problems, and a decline in one’s quality of life. The most common form is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which develops when a blockage occurs (usually the throat muscles collapse), sealing off the airway. This forces the brain to alert the body of its need to breathe. Individuals may then wake up gasping for air. These apnea episodes can occur hundreds of times each night, making it difficult to achieve quality rest.

Common Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Some of the most common signs of sleep apnea include:

  • Chronic daytime fatigue
  • Loud snoring
  • Irritability or moodiness
  • Inability to concentrate or focus
  • Morning headaches
  • Loss of libido
  • Rapid weight gain
  • Difficulty performing tasks at work
  • Waking up gasping or choking

Being able to recognize these symptoms early on can lower the risk of more serious issues developing in the future, such as:

  • Drowsy driving
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes

Oral Appliance Treatment

The most common form of sleep apnea treatment is a CPAP device. Short for continuous positive airway pressure, a CPAP machine is still highly effective for some patients; however, some individuals have complaints, such as:

  • The machines are bulky and difficult to maneuver
  • The device is loud, making it hard to fall asleep
  • The mask and tubing are a struggle and often uncomfortable to wear
  • CPAP devices are not easy to travel with

To help those who may be CPAP intolerant or who simply want a more user-friendly option, we provide oral appliance treatment. These small, pocket-sized devices fit inside the mouth and are easy to travel with.

Designed to keep the airway open while a person sleeps, it shifts the lower jaw forward just slightly so that the throat muscles will not fall back and cause an obstruction.
